Campaign Story
The American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA) has worked for over a decade to bring Choose Indie Local partners together to support locally owned businesses during the holiday season. Now, we invite you to strengthen our year-round movement.
We inspire community members to take positive action and boost the ripple effect of economic and community benefits our neighborhoods, towns, and cities receive when we spend and invest dollars at locally owned businesses.
Led locally but aligned nationally, our movement transcends the word “shop.” Community members at all levels participate as investors, creators, and Indie Local champions -- inspired by independent businesses’ impact on community health and wealth. Together, we build strong local, equitable, and sustainable economies.
Choose Indie Local offers imaginative and innovative ways to support locally owned and independent businesses of all types and in all regions in our nation. In 2022, over 200 independent businesses and organizations from 37 states partnered with AMIBA to bring Shop Indie Local campaigns to their communities. We'll build on the momentum we cultivated in 2022 by expanding our program from six to nine themes in 2023.
Let’s work together to promote the value of locally owned, independent businesses in sustaining strong local economies and:
- Demonstrate the strength and resilience of small, independent businesses.
- Cultivate a stronger alliance to nourish future collaborations to address the challenges that independent businesses face.
- Galvanize community members to advocate for future changes beyond their own purchasing practices.
With your support, our Choose Indie Local efforts will:
- Glean the best campaign ideas relating to our nine identified themes.
- Develop adaptable and easily replicable campaigns to share with partners at least three months in advance of launch dates.
- Increase awareness of and participation from organizations and businesses that support the local economy movement.
- Help partners to broadcast the value of locally owned, independent businesses in sustaining strong local, equitable, and inclusive economies.
Our 2023 Campaign Themes:
- Shop Black-Owned (February)
- Choose Indie Sustainable (March)
- Move Your Money (April)
- Bicycling Means Business (May)
- Pride Month (June)
- Independents Month (July)
- Eat Indie Local (August)
- Choose Indie Local Art (October)
- Shop Indie Local Holiday Season (November - December)
We will strive to keep participation in our 2023 campaigns accessible to all communities. In 2022, Choose Indie Local partnership was free. With your support, we can keep participation free or low-cost to all.
There is no movement without all of you. Please support our campaign today!

Giving Tuesday Mini-Goal Reached: Thank You!
Thank you to all who jump-started our Shop Indie Local crowdfunding campaign on #GivingTuesday. We reached our mini-goal of reaching $1k by the end of the day! WOO-HOO! Our campaign continues… -
Celebrating the Growth of Shop Indie Local
We’re thrilled to share that we’ve reached 40% of our crowdfunding goal AND wrapped up six Shop Indie Local campaigns in 2022 (up from just two campaigns in 2021). We also DOUBLED the number of campaign partners we recruited from 118 unique partners to 228. (See the chart below for the TOTAL partners we recruited since 2019.)
In response to partner feedback, we added more social media graphics to our library. We also hosted two virtual screenings of the film GATHER, a fantastic resource for Eat Indie Local partners. More and more communities embraced Plaid Friday this year and we look forward to gathering more feedback from our Shop Indie Local Holiday partners to help with next year’s planning. Stay tuned for more exciting plans and updates.
If each 2022 Shop Indie Local Partner gave just $10, we’d surpass our goal! Let’s make this happen!
