Campaign Story
Friends of Public Art, (501-c3), needs help to raise funds for a sculpture that will transform a once negative space into a welcoming sculpture park, providing a peaceful place for all in our community to enjoy. This sculpture, designed and created by local artist, Adam Schepker, will be placed at the Keene Airport near the newly formed labyrinth. No maintenance is required for this sculpture. It is completed and ready to be mounted in Fall 2020.
We have approval from the City of Keene and the Keene Airport to house the sculpture. The sculpture will immediately benefit residents of Cheshire County and the Monadnock Region and the park is open to the public. There is no religious or political purpose in this overall project.
Community members like Taryn Fisher, Craig Stockwell and Erika Radich have written letters of support for the sculpture park and are available for review.
Any funds raised above the goal will go directly to the funding of another sculpture and necessary tools associated with the current labyrinth projects (IE. flyers, marketing material etc.).
A Note about the Artist:
Adam Schepker has been creating public art pieces over the last decade. One of his most recognized pieces is a bench made from bicycle parts that is displayed in the green corridor behind the Monadnock Food Co-op in Keene. Adam is also is a lead organizer and instructor for 'Immersion in the Arts" the summer arts program in Harrisville, NH. Adam considers himself a sculptor first and foremost, but, for his day job, he works in the wood shop making looms at Harrisville Design.
A Note from the Artist:
PLAY, this word is at the heart of what I strive to portray or encourage with my work/sculptures. I make large participatory sculptures out of wood, stone and metal. I try to make sculptures that bring a joyful sense of play to everyone with a particular focus on adults. I feel adults lose their childhood sense of fun and joy due to their adult responsibilities and some strange code of conduct that many adults feel tied to. My main inspiration for this sculpture was the relationship of the modern engineering and geometry found at the airport and nature’s beautiful design surrounding it. My creative process was really about trying to find a harmonious way to display the beautiful steel base plates donated by the airport.

Only 5 More Days!
There has been HUGE success with the funding of this sculpture!
I am so happy to say we have gone above and beyond our expectations! The artist, the project founder and myself are extremely grateful for the funds that have been contributed and we look forward to the install date hopefully this fall! The 5×7 photo of the sculpture you will all receive will be sent once it is installed in its final home.
Since hitting the goal, I have started coordinating with the Parks & Rec. Dept. to schedule the install date. I will keep you all posted on the process of that.
The additional funds raised over the goal will go to support the other sculpture which will be going up at the airpot. This sculpture was funded by the Putnam Foundation in 2019 and I was just informed a week ago that the foundation fees for which the sculpture will sit were not covered. It turns out we have a large sum over what we need so that should not be a problem to support the other sculpture installation! Hooray!
Take care!

With love, hugs and gratitude,

Updates! W are getting closer to the installation!
Hi Everyone,
I wanted to share where we are with the project! Katie Schwerin, Adam Schepker and myself have been in conversations with Parks & Rec. and Public Works about the install of the sculpture. We are currently hammering out the details on:
Insurance for install day needing to be scheduled
Contracts needing to be signed between the artists and the City of Keene
Confirming there are no ground pipes/wires where the install will be
A final City Council meeting to confirm the transition of ownership of the sculpture
The install date is set to tentatively be in mid November of this year….so long as weather does not interfere!
I will make sure to update everyone when we are confident on an install date! For now, here’s a picture of my dog, Milk, looking out to Mt. Washington 🙂

About this event
World Refugee Day on June 20 is a day designated by the United Nations to celebrate the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. Each year, communities come together to build empathy and understanding for refugees’ plight and recognize their resilience in rebuilding their lives.

Where: The Mt. Monadnock Labyrinth and Peace Pole, located on Airport Road, Keene NH
What: Community celebration of World Refugee Day – FREE to the public
Who: Mohammad Saleh, local activist and Project Home co-founder
This event will feature a special address from Mohammad Saleh, a local activist and Project Home founding member who has been an active participant in efforts on immigration and clean energy issues. A member of the City of Keene’s Human Rights Committee, Saleh is a 2019 recipient of the Micah Hero Award given by the Granite State Organizing Project (GSOP)for his activism exemplifying just action, love of mercy, and humility.
Participants will be invited to walk the stone sculpture of the Mt. Monadnock Labyrinth to reflect on and deepen their internal experience of compassion and recognition of struggling people in our community and beyond.
“In 2022, the worldwide focus will be on the right to seek safety, making this is such a critical time for us to come together and call attention to the plight of refugees, knowing that we can do something in our community,” says Katie Schwerin, Badger’s Co-Founder and Chief Mission Officer.
In addition to helping organize the local World Refugee Day event, Katie Schwerin is an active participant in Project Home, hosting a refugee family in her home since 2020, and was the driving force behind the construction of the Mt. Monadnock Labyrinth.
Other local organizations concerned with the plight of refugees and providing support for the World Refugee Day event include Keene Immigrant and Refugee Partnership (KIRP), Team Monadnock Neighborhood Support Team for Afghan Refugees, Hannah Grimes Center for Entrepreneurship, and Monadnock Food Co-op.
About Project Home
Project Home was formed three years ago to support asylum seekers held in detention by offering an opportunity to live in local communities as they await a hearing on their asylum cases. The name was chosen deliberately. Home is not simply housing. Home includes a community where security, safety, and the basic needs of food, health care, and shelter are respected. In the last several years, six sets of families and/or individuals have been hosted in private homes in the Monadnock area. With the support of generous hosts and volunteers, the group’s hard-working guests have been able to move away from trauma toward hope. www.projecthomenh.org
About Monadnock Mindfulness Practice Center
Since 2002, the Monadnock Mindfulness Practice Center has provided the Monadnock area a quiet environment to learn and practice mindfulness, the art of bringing one’s full attention to the present moment. A cornerstone of mindfulness practice is compassion. In that spirit, the Center placed a peace pole at the airport labyrinth with engravings that acknowledge the wish that each person finds happiness, health, safety, and peace. https://mindfulnesskeene.org
